In the face of rapid urbanization, climate change, and widening socio-economic inequalities, the role of justice in shaping sustainable urban futures is more urgent than ever. Our session focuses on degraded urban environments where communities are often impacted by systemic neglect, informality, and planning failures.

This session seeks to explore how planning, governance, and participatory design can transform these spaces through justice-based and human-centered approaches.

• We welcome contributions that:
• Challenge technocratic and top-down planning
• Address structural inequalities and spatial injustices
• Promote gender-sensitive, culturally inclusive, and community-driven urban strategies

Engage with key urban justice theories such as The Right to the City, The Just City, Spatial Justice, Southern Urbanism, and Insurgent Citizenship

From Henri Lefebvre to Susan Fainstein, David Harvey, Edward Soja, Ananya Roy, and Loretta Lees, this session is grounded in powerful theoretical lenses that help reimagine neglected urban areas as environments of dignity, empowerment, and sustainable transformation.
