Abstract

Slums represent a pervasive global phenomenon, serving as housing solutions for populations unable to access formal housing markets. This issue is escalating in conjunction with rapid urbanization and population growth. Projections suggest that by 2050, approximately three-quarters of the global population will reside in urban environments (Avis, 2016, p. 57). This paper critically examines the revitalization project for Hay-Al Tanak, one of Beirut’s most impoverished slums. The project is designed to enhance both the physical and social environments through a long-term, integrated intervention aimed at fostering sustainable housing development and upgrading existing infrastructure. The proposed intervention underscores the urgency of addressing current urban challenges, while ensuring the long-term well-being of future generations.
